Workshops
Rick offers a variety of professional development opportunities and workshops on a wide range of topics concerning writing and writing instruction. He can tailor workshops for a single school faculty or for a system-wide in-service day. Rick has conducted workshops that combine classroom demonstrations and teacher debriefing sessions, as well as more traditional day-long sessions involving teachers and administrators only.
Workshop Titles Include:
- Write Where You Are! Strategies for Teaching Four Modes of Writing
- Beginnings, Middles, and Ends: Teaching Introductions, Conclusions and Transitions in Essays and Stories
- Teachers as Writers
- Writing for Character
- Writing Across the Curriculum
- Personal Essays for Teachers and Students
- Evaluating Student Writing: Where Do We Go From Here?
- Do I Have To Write It Again? Approaches to Revision and Editing in the Classroom
- Are You Listening? Writing, Reading and Writing Again
Rick's workshop, Write Where You Are! Strategies for Teaching Four Modes of Writing, is an overview of his approaches to teaching descriptive, expository, persuasive and narrative writing and uses his teacher's guide of the same name as a general outline. This workshop is particularly helpful for teachers who are just beginning to teach writing in their classrooms and/or who have responsibility for preparing students for state writing assessments.
If you are interested in offering a professional development opportunity for your school or school system, Rick will be happy to work with you in designing a workshop to meet your particular needs.
